Seasonal tune-ups
Four national cost guides put an air conditioner tune-up in roughly the same band, though their averages differ: This Old House gives $65 to $200 with an average of $133, Forbes Home gives $70 to $250 averaging $130, HomeGuide gives a $50 to $300 span with a $120 national average, and HomeAdvisor gives $75 to $200 averaging $100.
Furnace tune-ups land lower. HomeGuide reports $70 to $200 with a $130 average, and $80 to $170 for gas furnaces specifically. Bob Vila puts the typical range at $100 to $200. Thumbtack's sample of listed prices ran $58 to $138.
Those are national figures. The most useful local number we found is published by Hooper, a Madison company: its maintenance plan brochure states that non-members pay $153 per visit. That is above every national average above, which is worth knowing before you treat a national average as what you should expect to pay here.
What it costs just to get someone to the door
Most trades charge something before any repair begins. The figures vary by trade and by source:
- HVAC: ServiceTitan, writing for contractors, puts diagnostic fees at $75 to $150. Angi's cost guide gives $100 to $250 for the initial service call.
- Plumbing: askdoss reports $75 to $125 for a service call in the Milwaukee metro, with standard hourly rates of $95 to $150 and emergency rates of $150 to $250.
- Electrical: HomeAdvisor and ConsumerAffairs both describe a first-hour fee of $100 to $200 covering travel and diagnosis, with hourly rates of $50 to $130 after that. ConsumerAffairs notes many electricians also set a minimum charge, averaging about $100.
Whether that fee is credited toward the repair varies by company. ServiceTitan notes it is commonly applied to the bill if you approve the work, but that some shops only credit it if you approve within 24 to 48 hours. It is worth asking before the visit, not after.
Maintenance plans, as actually priced in Wisconsin
Four Wisconsin companies publish their plan pricing, and they cluster tightly:
- Hooper (Madison): $19/month, two visits a year, 10% off repairs.
- Black-Haak (Fox Valley): $19.95/month for furnace and AC tune-ups plus electrical and plumbing inspections; $12.95/month for a single-system plan.
- Dave Droegkamp (Butler, in the Milwaukee metro): $269/year, two tune-ups, 10% off repairs, no emergency surcharge for loss of heating or cooling.
- All Comfort Services (Madison): $33.50/month, which includes waiving a dispatch fee the company states is a $149 value.
Three of the four sit between $19 and $22.40 a month. Every one of them discounts repairs by about 10%, not more.
How to use these numbers
Treat the national averages as a floor rather than a target. Where a Wisconsin company publishes a rate, it tends to run higher than the national average for the same work. If a quote comes in well under these ranges, ask what is included; if it comes in well over, ask the same question.
